On Monday, Sept. 9, Langley announced that I have been assigned new
responsibilities as Senior Technologist for ASCAC and that
Jean-François Barthelemy has been appointed as Head of the MDO
Branch. To quote from the formal internal announcement, "Dr. Tom Zang
has been assigned to the position of Senior Technologist for the
Aerospace Systems Concepts and Analysis Competency, effective 9/8/02.
In this role he will lead strategic planning and requirements
definition for advanced methods development for systems analysis in
ASCAC, working closely with the systems analysis experts, and develop
cooperative methods development endeavors within Langley and with
external organizations as needed to support NASA and ASCAC advanced
systems analysis needs."

For those not familiar with the NASA Langley organization, ASCAC
stands for Aerospace Systems, Concepts and Analysis Competency, and
Bill Gilbert is the ASCAC Director. ASCAC reports to the Center
Director, is the Agency lead for systems analysis, and contains not
only the MDO Branch, but also the Advanced Aircraft Branch, the
Systems Analysis Branch, the Spacecraft and Sensors Branch and the
Vehicle Analysis Branch. More information about ASCAC is available at
http://centauri.larc.nasa.gov/ .

I can't think of a better person to lead the MDO Branch than
Jean-François, and I am absolutely delighted at his selection.
